State formally gives city project to analyze Coastal Trail extension

A project analyzing the proposed extension of Anchorage's Coastal Trail will now be formally turned over to the city, Gov. Frank Murkowski said Thursday.

A memorandum of agreement that transfers environmental and route studies will be signed by state and city officials during today's meeting of the AMATS transportation committee, according to staff with Mayor Mark Begich. Earlier this month, Begich secured a $450,000 grant from the Rasumuson Foundation to complete a federal study of the trail's environmental impact.

If built, the new trail would extend the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail from its terminus at Kincaid Park another 13 miles along Turnagain Arm to Potter Marsh. The controversial project had been stalled for months because of lack of money and no agreement between the state and city. The draft environmental study was finished a year ago.
