Rasmuson Foundation gives Coastal Trail extension a boost
Opponents to the long-awaited south extension of the Coastal Trail are organized and dedicated, but the bottom line belongs to people like Ed Rasmuson:
"The Coastal Trail is a major asset of the citizens of Anchorage, and its extension will benefit even more Alaskans."
Mr. Rasmuson said that only hours after the Rasmuson Foundation, under his leadership, committed more than $450,000 to complete environmental and route studies for the extension project. To their credit, they did so despite an e-mail campaign mounted by opponents.
He is right, and he carries substantial authority in the discussion -- not only because the foundation that bears his name committed itself to the project studies, but also because his own home in Turnagain adjoins the existing Coastal Trail.
Mayor Begich expressed appreciation to the foundation and hope for the project after hearing the news. The city's tasks now are to complete the studies, to hammer down costs on the 13-mile extension, to ameliorate the impact on affected property owners and, if all that comes together properly, to move dirt for the trail.
Trails, as Mr. Rasmuson said, are one of Anchorage's best assets -- and this could be one of its best trails. The Rasmuson Foundation's leadership at this moment means a lot.
BOTTOM LINE: The Rasmuson Foundation deserves the community's thanks for stepping up to an important project.
