Coastal Trail

City to state: Show us the money

Anchorage Daily News Opinion, August 16, 2003

Nobody said it was going to be easy to extend the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, but it's good news that Mayor Mark Begich wants the project back from the state. State funds already set aside for the project should come with it.

When former Gov. Tony Knowles seemed more interested in the project than former Mayor George Wuerch, he took it over at the state level and spent most of two years trying to work out the wrinkles. Now that Mayor Begich seems more interested than Gov. Frank Murkowski, the city will get another chance to lead the way.

That's fine. This project needs Mayor Begich's compromise- and consensus-building skills. It remains a compelling vision and a wonderful opportunity for the community.

Perhaps $100,000 in state money is programmed for preliminary work on the project, and that's where it belongs. Department of Transportation regional director Mike Scott said, "We're open to considering it." Sending the money is a small step in the long saga of the trail extension -- but doing it would make the state a part of the solution.

BOTTOM LINE: The mayor's right: Show us the money.
